Construction and use of a first-generation Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), concentrating on the one in Livingston, Louisiana, a short drive from LSU. LIGO's science is organized by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, with member institutions around the world. LSU also is home to another gravitational-wave detector, ALLEGRO. LIGO, ALLEGRO, and my group at LSU are privileged to receive funding from the National Science Foundation.
Research on an advanced seismic isolation system that is under development for the next-generation gravitational-wave detector, which is called Advanced LIGO. This work is in close collaboration with Stanford, MIT, and Caltech. We have just successfully implemented one part of this advanced seismic isolation at LIGO Livingston, the Hydraulic External Pre-Isolation (HEPI) system.
